Heroes of Spyria

Some of you may have noticed on the main/about page a button linking to a game on Steam called Heroes of Spyria.

Demo available on Steam
This is my game, built using RPG Maker MV over several years. Growing up, I was a huge fan of JRPGs. Especially games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. This game is in essence a love letter to those classics from the golden era of JRPGs. If you're fans of those games, you'll see their fingerprints all over this game.

When I first found RPG Maker, it was on version VX Ace. I followed a tutorial that eventually became Chapter 1 of the game, and stepped me through the basics. By the end of the tutorial you had a simple game to play through. But of course I added my on touches to it. Fleshing out the story, adding sidequests, etc. I finished it and shelved it.

Years later a new version of RPG Maker had been released. MV. I decided to see how hard it would be to convert it. The process wasn't w/o its bumps, but it wasn't horrible. After I'd converted it I decided why not keep going and make a Chapter 2?

And so my on again off again quest to become an indie game developer began. The story itself let me explore parts of my own life that I struggled with. In a way it was cathartic. And after 9 years of on again off again development, I had a complete game.

Ultimately I'm very happy with the story I told and the characters I created. It's not the next blockbuster, but the people who have found it seem to genuinely enjoy it.

Lately I've found myself missing the world of Spyria. So I've taken up creative writing. My goal is to create a prequel trilogy to explore the events that lead up to the game. It would act as a sort of primer, though not required, and be sold on Amazon as an ebook. So far, it's going well. And I'm enjoying revisiting the world and some of the characters.

As for the game itself, I stand by my work and I'm proud of it. Heroes of Spyria is probably in the neighborhood of 20+ hours to finish. Personally, I've always though of cost value for games in very simple terms. One dollar per hour enjoyed. So at 5 bucks, you could do worse!
