Cyberdeck

Lately I've had a lot of interest in starting a project. Like a big, meaty one. In the past I've made some really cool things, but lately I've been stagnant. I think that's had something to do with my 3D printer. In theory it would make me more creative by giving me a new avenue to make things. In reality, it's just resulted in me downloading and printing other people's work.

And so, I've resolved to make something. And that something is going to be a cyberdeck. I'm still in the very early stages of planning, but here's where my head is currently.

Most cyberdecks I see appear to be very cool aesthetically. But I have serious doubts about their usefulness. Mostly because the screen is so small and, for some reason, they feel the need to further complicate that with a GUI. I'm a keyboard cowboy. I live in the command line. So I think if I have a slightly larger screen that's all terminal, maybe this can be something useful.

My gut is to go with the Waveshare 11.9. It's dramatically wide, and a 60% keyboard would fit the footprint nicely. Plus I can literally mount a Raspberry Pi directly onto the back. This feels like 80% of the build is just done.

I just need to convince myself this is a worthwhile endeavor. If it's compact and light enough, I can absolutely see myself pulling this thing out and having quick access to a terminal with all of my files remotely mounted. SSH'ing around and working w/ docker containers, services, etc.

Right now though, my biggest hurdle is myself. It's a bit of an investment to get the gear to get started. And I don't want something that's just going to sit on the shelf and look cool. Still, the itch to create calls to me. If this project moves forward, I'll definitely put details in this space.

Stay tuned!
